In Lands Most Forbidden

d66 Reasons Why You Delve

1. Dwarves

1.1 The smell of gold is always on the air down there. Some here, some there, but never enough. There is more a bit deeper down, surely.
1.2 A masterwork of metal and gems lies unfinished. If only some mithril or adamantine could be found, the work could go on unbroken.
1.3 Your forge-brother sought furnace and bellows strong enough to melt metal from the stars. The red beast below sought a meal, crunchy and meaty.
1.4 The mine has been plucked clean of gems and ore. Rumors are told of the rubies and sapphires, bigger than your head, that lie waiting.
1.5 Mountain clans hold grudges longer than most, and the goblins that ambushed the last expedition are still down there.
1.6 The title of Tunnelwarden is an honor one most fight to hold. Learning the tricks and traps of the dungeon will win you the title once more.

2. Elves

2.1 The wind whispers of an ancient melody, lost to your kin. An elf that finds the Bladesong is one to be feared.
2.2 Ages have passed since you last felt a challenge. Surely, your skills can be tested once more.
2.3 The Wood offers no prey that excites. The hunt has been mastered, and a new quarry must be found.
2.4 A previous expedition proved that others will pay well for your keen senses. This time, you want more than a finder's fee.
2.5 Long nights under the cold moon have given you a taste of darkness. It is not enough, though. The stars are too bright. Deeper, deeper.
2.6 Well, you're immortal. Why not? A few years of treasure hunting will set you up nicely for the next century or two.

3. Fighters

3.1 In a dream, you a magic sword deep underground. Last night, Sword in hand, you dreamt of standing before armies, a crown heavy on your brow.
3.2 The war took more from you than most. But so too, it gave. Strength and skills it gave, along with ears shut tight to pleas of mercy.
3.3 The fourth son of a noble has few other options. Family lands will not be yours, so a castle must be funded somehow.
3.4 The blade, a sighing sinking edge. It is all you know, all you have ever cared to learn. Men prove no contest, so monsters it must be.
3.5 Adrenaline is the only drug that works anymore. The others were nice, sure, but nothing stirs the blood quite like facing death.
3.6 Not this dungeon. No, another is responsible for taking your father. He tried to feed his family, but it was not you who feasted then.

4. Halflings

4.1 An uncle did the same, once long ago. Finally, maybe your cousins will stop comparing you to him.
4.2 Tales and songs of the elves tell of the dungeon granting your every desire. Surely a full belly isn't too much of an ask.
4.3 Other pipeweed connoisseurs spend years tending gardens to produce a new strain. You've heard of far better leaf growing underground.
4.4 One day a mad wizard showed up at your nice doorstep and tricked you into agreeing to some kind of suicidal tomb-robbing scheme.
4.5 Gardening has never held much interest for you. Trying a hand at burgling beats any other type of work you've heard of.
4.6 Off on an adventure

5. Magic Users

5.1 The master gave you little choice in the matter of finding a certain scroll for him.
5.2 A shortage of magical reagents has put a stop to your alchemical studies. Choice ingredients are rumored to grow in dark corners. 5.3 Your studies have left more questions than they gave answers. A being from another plane may have the knowledge you seek.
5.4 Everyone has heard of the grimoire held by the Mad Mage. You don't believe it though, and will only rest if you can hold it yourself.
5.5 Telescope lenses are quite expensive. The planetary convergence is SOON, and you need the gold now.
5.6 To create works of untold mystery and power. You will write your name in history and let others marvel at your wonder.

6. Thieves

6.1 The town streets are much too hot right now. You need to keep your head down, and there isn't anywhere much lower.
6.2 The guildmaster never mentioned how much dept he was in, or to who. He did tell you it's your job to pay it off, with a dagger on your neck.
6.3 Came down here once with a friend, on a dare. You didn't know the doors locked automatically. Maybe, maybe he's still behind it.
6.4 An ill-spent youth gave you a certain set of skills. You've managed to turn it into a well-paying career.
6.5 A certain noble caught you in his closet at night. Instead of having you arrested, he demanded treasure each month, and you're behind schedule.
6.6 Normal jobs never worked out since you could never focus. The pressure of disarming a trap with a needle at your neck gives you clarity.
